How does Medical Acupuncture work?
Medical Acupuncture, also known as Trigger Point Acupuncture or Dry Needling, uses fine needles to work into trigger points within muscles. Medical acupuncture is widely used to reduce pain within specific tissues, needles inserted into the muscles stimulate the nerve endings causing the brain to release endorphins- pain relieving chemicals. During treatment the practitioner will palpate for tender areas in the muscles known as trigger points into which the fine needle is then inserted. The technique is often used to form part of a wider treatment in conjunction with other techniques such as massage, mobilisation and manipulation. It is widely accepted medically to be effective in the treatment of both chronic and acute musculoskeletal conditions.
